Western Lakes Ecological Efforts

Western Lakes and the surrounding area is home to a wealth of wildlife. The landscape in and around the development has been enhanced with mature planting and preservation measures have been implemented to safeguard protected habitats and existing populations of protected species. These improvements integrate into the existing environments at Western Lakes and create a framework that ensures that local flora and fauna can thrive.

Bats

Bat boxes are to be installed on retained trees away from artificial sources of light as well as the south facing aspects of the buildings at Western Lakes, with boxes for hibernation placed on the north side of some homes. Integrated bat boxes are built directly into the brickwork of a property, providing an unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing habitat solution. The boxes consist of a self-contained concrete roost chamber with a facing that can be fitted to suit any existing brick, wood, stonework or rendered finish. The development will also be enriched via the planting of species known to benefit bats such as common maple, silver birch, common hornbeam and rowan.

Birds

To replace nesting habitat lost during the construction process, a variety of bird boxes will be included across Western Lakes. These will cater for a range of endangered species and comprise of integrated sparrow terraces and boxes for starlings, with general sizes installed on homes as well as in retained and newly planted trees around the development.

Hedgehogs

A population of hedgehogs has been identified close to Western Lakes and consideration has been taken to allow their movement through the development. Holes in garden fences will allow them to travel around the area.
